Disaggregation reinforces the evidence for the place-specific pattern of support for the SNP. Northern Grampian, Eastern Tayside, Galloway, and Western Isles are consistently the most nationalist areas. In 1970 the following constituencies had the highest SNP vote shares (20 percent or more): Aberdeenshire East, Angus South, Argyll, Banffshire, Western Isles, Galloway, Hamilton, Kinross and West Perthshire, West Stirlingshire, and West Lothian. In 1979 the following occupied a similar position: Aberdeenshire East, Angus South, Argyll, Banffshire, Dundee East, Galloway, Moray and Nairnshire, Perth and East Perthshire, Clackmannan and East Stirlingshire, and Western Isles. Of the ten high shares in 1970, six reappear in 1979; and of the four others, two are in the same regions (Central and Tayside) in both 1970 and 1979. The 1983 election involved new constituency boundaries, but though this disrupted links between places and parties, a similar pattern to that of 1979 is evident. The following nine constituencies had SNP votes in excess of 20 percent (percentage of vote in parentheses): Western Isles (54.5), Dundee East (43.8), Banff and Buchan (37.4), Angus East (36.0), Moray (35.2), Galloway (30.8), Perth and Kinross (25.1), Argyll (24.6), and Tayside North (24.3) (Fig. 7.3). Of the nine first or second places for SNP in 1983, seven were in Tayside, Grampian, or Galloway.
